Gham Power unveiled the country’s first-ever soluble lead-flow battery

Gham Power Nepal has recently unveiled the country’s first-ever Soluble Lead-Flow Battery (SLFB), an emerging energy-storage technology developed and demonstrated for Nepal. Prof. Richard Wills of the University of Southampton led a live, hands-on demonstration, walking journalists and energy-sector professionals through exactly how the battery works and how it is made.

At the heart of the SLFB is a simple idea: give new life to lead recovered from used batteries, repurposing it as the core material for storing electricity generated from solar and hydropower. As Nepal’s renewable energy capacity grows, so does the need for reliable storage; a gap the SLFB is designed to help close, with potential applications in renewable-energy integration and longer-duration stationary storage.

During the demonstration, Prof. Wills showed how the battery charges and discharges, walking through how lead was sourced from end-of-life lead-acid batteries, giving attendees a rare, up-close look at flow-battery technology in action and a chance to question the researcher behind it.

The SLFB is being advanced through a partnership between Gham Power, the University of Southampton, SOLead Energy, and Swanbarton, combining international research expertise with local knowledge to adapt the technology to Nepal’s operating environment.

As Nepal’s clean energy ambitions accelerate, the SLFB offers a homegrown, recycled-material approach to storage suited to the country’s resources. The event brought together journalists, energy professionals, and clean-energy advocates for a firsthand look at the technology and a broader conversation on Nepal’s energy-storage future.
