Swiss Ambassador to Nepal Danielle Meuwly said that AI could amplify both facts and fake news, making fact-checking essential, especially for young people during a program called Media Talk Series organized by St. Xavier’s College, Maitighar on Friday.
She was of the opinion that in such a time fact-checking is a must to avoid being the victim of disseminating fake information, misinformation, and disinformation.
‘We live in a time where information is abundant—instant and powerful. Whether as journalists, content creators, or social media users, we all shape public narratives’, she added.
Speaking as the special guest, she emphasized, “Your voice matters. Your choices matter. And your commitment to critical thinking, integrity, and informed engagement will shape the future of democracy.”
As an expert panel, Umesh Chauhan, Group Editor at Himalaya TV and Onlinekhabar.com, observed that youths increasingly consumed short-form content rather than reporters’ detailed reportages. Senior journalist Chauhan also invited students studying mass communication to get firsthand newsroom experience to better understand journalists’ role in fostering democratic societies.
Suraj Subedi, content creator and cultural critic, argued that content creators can also serve as a watchdog, as they also critically examine and challenge their own biases to produce more balanced, responsible, and impactful content.
Fr. Dr. Augustine Thomas, S.J., the principal of the college, praised the performance and said, “The series, under the theme ‘Journalists vs. Content Creators: Complementing or Competing in Shaping Public Narratives,’ truly stimulated the minds of the audience. From the thoughtful selection of the theme to its excellent execution, the talk series was a visible example of how well-formed the Xavierians are and of the competence and dedication of the faculty who mentor them.”
In a note, Chun Bahadur Gurung, Faculty Coordinator of the MediaTalk series, emphasized that the central question in the age of AI is not whether journalists or content creators shape public narratives but how both can responsibly complement each other in strengthening democratic societies. “Journalism remains as a pillar of democracy when it is practiced in accordance with its core principles”, he added.
