काठमाडौं ।
Team composed of Nepal, India and Pakistan (a part of HackCorruption; organized by Accountability Lab) has launched the first version of a web application called ‘Know Your Parliamentarian (KYP)’ including information about the members of federal parliament of Nepal.
The team had won seed funding, mentorship and ongoing support during the program organized in February and June 2023 by Accountability Lab and HackCorruption Initiative in Kathmandu.
KYP is an automated tool that uses web-scraping technology to collect data about Members of Parliament (MP) from verified online sources including electoral and political history, controversies and wealth information of each of the members of parliament.
‘Our objective is to make an entry-point of verified data on parliamentarians of Nepal. Though these kinds of applications are available in other South Asian Countries like India and Bangladesh, it is a new initiative for Nepal’, said Surendra Koirala, one of the team members from Nepal.
The application currently allows users to find data available from the Election Commission and Federal Parliament of Nepal. Users can also track the electoral history of MPs, for example, changing political parties or constituencies for election. ‘More data will be available once we fine-tune our scraping tool and start adding other verified sources’, said Paresh Rawal, another team member from India.
The diverse composition of the team, with members from Nepal, India, and Pakistan, reflects a collaborative regional approach to addressing issues related to transparency and accountability in politics. Such cross-border collaborations are essential for fostering a spirit of cooperation and sharing best practices in the fight against corruption.
Paresh Rawal (India), Sidra Safi and Aayesh Abbasi (Pakistan), and Sujan Regmi and Surendra Koirala (Nepal) are the team members of the initiative.
