Unorganized telephone, internet and TV wires to be managed within two weeks

काठमाडौं ।

The government has directed the concerned agencies to prepare a time-bound action plan to manage internet, telephone and television wires that have been tangled in electricity poles and lying on roadsides in the Kathmandu Valley for years.

A high-level inter-agency meeting held at the Ministry of Energy Wednesday in the presence of Minister for Information and Communications Dr Bikram Timilsina and Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha directed the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, Nepal Electricity Authority, Nepal Telecom, Ncell and ISPAN, an umbrella organization of internet service providers, to prepare an integrated action plan and remove unused wires from six places in the valley in the first phase by the end of this month.

Since unorganized wires pose a risk to the safety of citizens and also affect the beauty of the city wire management will be carried out in the first-phase in six locations, namely Tripureshwor-Kalimati-Kalanki, Jadibuti-Pepsicola, Tripureshwor-Lazimpat, Samakhushi-Town Planning-Gongabu, Kirtipur area and Old Baneshwor-Gaushala-Chabahil.

During the meeting, Minister for Information and Communications Dr Timilsina said that the problem of unorganized wires was created due to the weaknesses of all agencies and emphasized that now the focus should be on solving it. A

Minister Timilsina directed the immediate removal of unused cables while noting that once the cables are hung the responsibility of removing them also lies with the service provider concerned.

He directed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) to effectively regulate and maintain coordination among all agencies and prepare an integrated action plan with a clear time frame for the task.
Likewise, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, said that effective coordination among all agencies is indispensable for the management of unorganized cables.

He said that the work will be started as a pilot project in a specific area and expanded to other areas based on the outcome. “The government will soon take the necessary decision on recovering the pole rent owed to the Nepal Electricity Authority by internet service providers,” he said while sharing that the government is positive about establishing an infrastructure company for telecommunications and electricity wire management.

In the meeting, ISPAN President Sudhir Parajuli said that systematic identification is necessary as the ownership of the wires on the poles is not clear in many places. He mentioned that preparations are being made to lay internet wires underground as a pilot project in the Baneshwor area. RSS
