Practical IT training reshaping how Nepal’s youth and professionals enter the tech workforce

काठमाडौं ।

As Nepal’s digital economy expands and employers demand job-ready talent, a growing number of students, recent graduates, and working professionals are turning to practical, hands-on IT training rather than relying on academic credentials alone.

Traditional classroom learning is increasingly being supplemented and in some cases replaced by project-based training that mirrors real workplace tasks. Institutes offering this model say the shift reflects what employers are actually looking for: candidates who can build, ship, and troubleshoot real work from day one.

Kathmandu-based Skill Shikshya is one of the institutes built specifically around this approach. Founded in 2019 and based in Sankhamul, Baneshwor, the institute says it has trained more than 10,000 students to date, working with a network of 45+ industry-experienced mentors across 50+ job-oriented programs.

Its course catalogue spans web and full-stack development, digital marketing, UI/UX design, data science and analytics, cybersecurity, quality assurance (QA), DevOps, and other technology and professional skills in demand across Nepal’s job market.

According to the institute, students completing its programs see a 91% placement rate within three months of graduation, supported by a network of more than 1,000 hiring partners.

The institute attributes these outcomes to a training structure built around live mentor-led sessions, portfolio-grade capstone projects, and dedicated career preparation rather than pre-recorded content alone.

“Nepal doesn’t have a shortage of talent; it has a shortage of job-ready talent. Our goal at Skill Shikshya has never been to hand out certificates; it’s to make sure that when a student walks into an interview, they can point to a real project they built and speak about it with confidence. That’s what turns an interview into a job offer,” said Umesh Subedi, Co-Founder & CEO, Skill Shikshya.

The shift toward outcomes-driven IT training also reflects broader changes in Nepal’s job market. As local startups, established IT firms, and companies serving international clients continue to hire, employers increasingly ask for demonstrable project work and applied skills alongside or instead of formal degrees.

Remote and freelance opportunities with global companies have also opened an additional income path for professionals trained in in-demand digital skills, adding urgency to the push for practical, verifiable training.

To make training accessible across a range of student profiles, institutes like Skill Shikshya now run morning, evening, weekend, and online batches, aimed at students fresh out of SEE or +2, career-switchers, and working professionals upgrading their skills around existing jobs.

For a generation of Nepali students and job seekers weighing where to invest their time and money, the emerging expectation is clear: verifiable placement data, real employer partnerships, and a body of completed project work now matter as much as or more than a certificate alone.
