Nepal Telecom said- use the SIM card registered in your own name, make 2FA mandatory

काठमाडौं ।

Nepal Telecom has requested all service providers to use SIM cards registered in their own name.

The telecommunications company has also asked to use the two factor authentication system without relying only on OTP (one time password) to stay digitally safe.

In the current situation, mobile number (SIM card) is not only an easy way to communicate, send messages and use the Internet, but the lifestyle is becoming easier with the use of mobile numbers in various digital activities including national identity cards, citizen apps, banking transactions, share transactions, cash transactions and social networks. . In addition, due to the fact that all personal data from documents, savings and other valuable and daily use materials and information can be accessed through the mobile number, the mobile number has also been established as a very sensitive item. If the mobile number you are using is registered in your own name, all the mentioned tasks can be completed safely.

When using a mobile number that is not registered in the user’s own name or is registered in someone else’s name, there is always a risk that all the data, banking transactions and other important personal materials in the mobile number may be accessed by an unrelated person. In this situation, there is a possibility that the user may lose cash due to misuse of mobile banking, unauthorized use of social media may lead to many legal problems, including security risks. In order not to create such a situation, Nepal Telecom requests all customers to use mobile numbers registered in their own name and if the SIM card is lost/damaged, they should be present to receive the SIM card themselves.

When the technology was developed with the concept of mobile service, the main purpose was only to communicate or send messages and it was not envisaged to be a sensitive activity including financial transactions. In such a situation, Nepal Telecom requests that the concerned financial institutions, to make financial transactions mainly through mobile numbers more secure and reliable, should not rely only on the OTP (one time password) received on the SIM card to make the two factor authentication system mandatory.
